I know things are getting dire with the hockey teams these days. The NHL players’ union only has until 11:59 PM on Saturday to accept the current contract offer or face (another) lockout, but I suspect other leagues are starting to get really, really desperate as well. How can I tell? The Bakersfield Condors, an ECHL team in California, and former NHL affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks, offered a contract to Justin Bieber.
For real.
Now, at 5’7”, Bieber might not seem like the greatest hockey prospect, and the Condors have created a ridiculous Twitter hashtag #BiebsinBako that is pretty clearly a publicity stunt. However, their offer to J.Biebs seems to be pretty legit. According to their website, Coach Matt O’Dette said:
“Very rarely do you see this combination of skill and toughness,” said O’Dette. “We share a common Canadian heritage since we both hail from Ontario. I’ve scouted some video of him online skating with my hometown team, the Toronto Maple Leafs, and I think he could provide some elusive speed up front for us. Plus, he’s a right-handed shot which we’ve been looking to add. I think if we paired him on a line with (Robby) Dee and (Peter) Boyd we’d be tough to beat.”
No word yet on whether Bieber is actually considering the offer; but at least he’d have the best helmet hair in the league.
