Zorb: The New Sport That Kills You

A "Zorb" Accident

Zorbing is a real thing. I had no clue what that word was until yesterday. The first time I heard it, I figured it was something that a few hack kids on a beach in New Jersey made up, so of course when I heard zorbing accident it got my attention.

A little background: Zorbing is a new sport taking Russia by storm. In fact, it is even one of the symbols for the Sochi Olympic games in 2014. The "sport" entails a giant transparent ball that two adults strap into. The riders then hurl themselves down a ski hill while they are inside of the ball. Let's break this down:

  1. Most ski hills are on mountains.
  2. Mountains have cliffs.
  3. Cliffs are bad.

So if you add two adults hurtling down the mountain in an uncontrollable rubber ball, then it's safe to say that nothing good is going to come from this sport. Unfortunately for two tourists, nothing good is what happened.

As you can see in the video below, the ball started bouncing and strayed off course. It then bounced and rolled over a cliff. Despite the valiant attempt of people trying to stop the zorb, one person was killed and one was seriously injured.

You can check out the video below, but be aware that even though it isn't graphic, it is still tragic.
